YOUTH, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Minister Cde Patrick Zhuwao yesterday called for unity in Mashonaland West Province, as he reminded party supporters that the only centre of power in Zanu-PF was President Mugabe.

In a letter to Mashonaland West ahead of its provincial conference, Cde Zhuwao said it was time for people in the province to reaffirm their support for the President.

“Today (yesterday) as we meet for the provincial conference it becomes necessary that we, as the leadership of Zanu-PF Mashonaland West Province, reaffirm our unwavering support, loyalty and allegiance to His Excellency President R.G Mugabe,” he said.

Cde Zhuwao said some people were pushing succession politics.

“This is particularly important in the light of attempts by successionists to propagate narratives that seek to suggest that President Mugabe should announce a successor when he has not even completed half of his term,” he said.

Added Cde Zhuwao: “Such successionists seek to hijack and steal President Mugabe’s mandate, perhaps because of the realization that their succession candidates are unelectable.

“Mashonaland West Province has always been the target of succession plots starting before the 2004 congress with the pre-Tsholotsho gatherings in Zvimba and more recent attempts by disgraced former provincial chair.”

He urged the province to remain vigilant.

“As a province, we must remain vigilant that our province is not used to undermine President Mugabe through such strategies as attacks on the First Lady, questioning the President’s decision making capacities by attacking his appointments, and such fiascos as the occurrence at the official opening of Parliament,” Cde Zhuwao said.

He said officials in Government and the Politburo must realise they were appointed to assist President Mugabe.

“It is necessary and important that all appointed officials in Government and Politburo are reminded that they were appointed to assist the President and as such they must remain loyal and distance themselves from successionist narratives. Failure to do so confirms disloyalty to the one centre of power, President Mugabe,” Cde Zhuwao added.
