Demonstrators in Harare called on the police to join them yesterday to mount pressure on President Robert Mugabe’s rule in a march to commemorate the disappearance of pro-democracy activist Itai Dzamara.

Scores of civil society activists joined the Dzamara family to mark the 17-month anniversary of his disappearance. The march was the latest in a string of protests against the Mugabe regime.

“As we remember Itai today, I say to the police: ‘Join the people now to fight against Mugabe and let us remember the work of Itai Dzamara, who went missing while advocating for everyone’s freedom’,” said National Vendors’ Union of Zimbabwe chair Sten Zvorwadza.

Children of the missing activist offered cake and flowers to the police who monitored the march. None took the gifts; instead they left the demonstrators alone.

“We want to show that love is what moulds us; we will win this battle through love. We say no to police brutality,” said Patson Dzamara, Itai’s brother.
