£100 for UK dinner with Tsvangirai

via £100 for UK dinner with Tsvangirai 14 July 2014

MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai is expected in the United Kingdom later this month to meet supporters and attend an event arranged to help raise funds for the party’s October congress.

The MDC-T has brought forward its elective congress from 2016 to resolve a leadership dispute that has seen the party split into two after a group of dissenters demanded that Tsvangirai step down – a call the former premier rejected.

In a statement this week, the MDC-T’s UK branch said Tsvangirai – accompanied by wife Elizabeth – would be in the UK on July 26 to meet the local Zimbabwean community as well as address party structures.

“The party in the UK has also laid on a fundraising dinner to support the October congress, where members of the Zimbabwean community in the UK will be able to have an intimate dinner with President Tsvangirai,” said a party spokesman in the statement.

“He (Tsvangirai) will be accompanied by his wife Elizabeth and the acting treasurer-general, Theresa Makone. The meetings with the structures and members will be held in the Midlands on the 26th July at a venue to be advised.

“The dinner will be held in Birmingham on Saturday 26th July in the evening. Invitations will be sent to those who would have indicated their willingness to attend by … depositing their £100 into the MDC-T account.

“All Zimbabweans in the UK and those who support democracy in Zimbabwe can support the party congress while also having an opportunity to have an intimate dinner discussion with President Tsvangirai by paying £100 into the MDC account at HSBC.”

Tsvangirai is expected to discuss with his UK supporters the leadership dispute which has rocked the MDC-T as well as explain his recent calls for national dialogue to address the Zimbabwe’s deepening economic problems.

Zanu PF has said it was open to the proposed talks on condition Tsvangirai endorses his defeat in last year’s elections which the opposition leader dismissed as fraudulent.

Addressing party youths in Harare recently, Tsvangirai said Zimbabwe had no prospect of attracting much-needed investment and new funding under the Zanu PF-led government.

“Zanu PF Ministers are not given money … we meet them overseas begging for money but they are not given … Vanoti kana manga muri vaya vaya tingadai takupai (investors say we cannot give you money unless you are with the MDC),” said the MDC-T leader.

Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa is understood to be currently in China where the government is trying to secure an immediate US$10 billion injection to help stem the country’s economic slide.

Longer term, the government requires about US$27 billion to fully implement its ZimAsset economic blueprint.

But Tsvangirai said no investor would put money into Zimbabwe with President Robert Mugabe still in charge.

“There is no investor willing to invest in Zimbabwe as long as Mugabe is still in power. I would rather keep my money under the pillow than put it in a bank, lest Mugabe comes and takes it,” he said.

Maybe it shall work for the beleaguered ex PM through his loyal suppoters, but on the side of pragmatist those who apply reason and afterthought of hindsight than sentiment,he has a mountain to climb together with his acolytes.

I would not pay £100 for his womanising ways. We have recently heard that he has abused the funds for his personal matters and along with his weak leadership he has shown to be a failure.

I suppose soon he will accept he lost the last election and jump back into bed with ZPF, after all he has not taken his evidence to court and has not accepted his mistakes. This chap has shown he is only in it for himself.

    Lost my respect and support.

This is a wonderful moment. I and my friends are definitely attending. While I can not participate in the activities in Zimbabwe, I can make a financial contribution designed to put things in place to push democratic change agenda forward. Count me in.

My deposit and that of my six friends is coming in tmro

He had an opportunity to finnish off Zanu , but got districted by his other interests.
He is a spent force, I would not waste my time and my money would be well spent in an orphanage .
Good luck to those who will attend.

When he pulled out of second run off round 2008 and rescued zanupf joining the gravy train that did it for me. Today we are vindicated by the mood prevailing for a street revolution mob justice instead of the 2018 nikuv erection bull

LOL! All you guys who commented will be very angry when the fundraising dinner becomes a huge success without you. Actually, some of you are hard-core zanoids who never understood what Tsvangirayi was doing, while others stood on the sidelines just wishing for change that never came when they expected it to. If the truth be told, the brave man DOES have support. If I was close by, I would buy the plate just so to properly advise MT to strategise and give the leadership role to a person who, within 4 years must change things, level the political playing field and then quit to pave way for those power hungry. And I do know know of one person who would be liked by three groups, MDC, ZanuPF and the International Community. Those to be near MT, please help him to be a back bencher while pulling strings from behind.

Mr President..fund raising @ £100 per dinner plate whilst palatable with some… risks further alienation from grassroot support. Not all yr real supporters in the UK may afford. A Fish and chip supper at a chosen venue inviting members of the audience to outbid each other in good jest would have not only be good PR but still raise sizeable donations. There is need to rub shoulders with ordinary folk..share a beer or two..back slap and have a good laugh. That will win you back hearts and minds..take a cue from Barack Obama..hameno veduwe kungotaurawo..

These so called organisers are failing to pay their monthly subs one wonders how will then afford £100 unless Matewu and company will be paying back the thousands of pounds which went missing in the UK. Tsvangirai will be embarrassed to see only a handful at the dinner dance. Days are gone when we used to make pressure to be taken pictures. We are all British citizens now. Asina irombe

Tuku or Mukanya stage a show in the UK and Zimbos flock in droves in their hired 4x4s, at what cost?

We got a man, flowed though he might be, trying to fight ZANU and all we can do is laugh at him.
Speaks volumes about us as a people and why we are the laughing stalk of the world right now.
