Grace Mugabe, the First Lady of Zimbabwe, was awarded a doctorate in the Faculty of Social Studies at the University of Zimbabwe on Friday. Newsday, a Zimbabwe daily paper, notes that Mrs. Mugabe had previously struggled in the past to get a bachelor’s degree. It added that no documents have been found yet that she recieved a Master’s Degree, the second step to obtaining a PhD. RFI’s Laura Angela Bagnetto spoke to Rejoice Ngwenya, the head of COMALISO, a public policy think tank in Harare, who says that issuing PhDs to politicians has been a trend in Zimbabwe of late:

Look this is bulldust. this is an absolute disgrace (excuse the pun) to Zimbabwe. Our education is now also a laughing stock. may God have mercy on our nation!

God have mercy on all those who studied and slaved away for years to get their qualifications at the University of Zimbabwe. They are worthless now, or at best laughable and highly questionable. Even if Grace eventually produces something there is no way that she will ever have written it herself, regardless of whose name is on it. Money talks everywhere in this country of ours, and when you can pay somebody to write something for you, why not? Just more corruption.

A military strongman ruling the Dominican Republic with an iron fist, Rafael Trujillo (or “El Jefe”) seized power in 1930 through a rigged election in which he gave himself more votes than voters, because why not?

Trujillo then appointed his 3-year-old son Ramfis as a colonel, because being a military commander himself he realized this was a strategic masterpiece. Then he organized a $30 million event called the Fair of Peace and Fraternity of the Free World to crown his daughter queen — an event that lasted an entire year and vaporized one-third of the national budget. At the same fair, his nearly illiterate wife was honored as a “writer and philosopher,” and Trujillo went on to campaign for her to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, which would’ve made her the first person in history to win the award for absolutely no reason.

Trujillo renamed the capital, multitudes of roads, buildings, bridges and even freaking mountains after himself. He required every license plate to say “Viva Trujillo” and every church to feature the phrase “Dios en cielo, Trujillo en tierra” (God in Heaven, Trujillo on Earth).

This is not new. There is an end to everything.

Whoever writes for her will forever be looking over they shoulder. Ruthless gang she runs, feeling fully justified in any violence they produce. No conscience, no morals. They reward awaits.

All those who had sleepless nights to obtain class 1 degrees have come to nothing.Reputation is lost, totally lost.Academics ere awarded Doctorates after presenting their researches, and publishing with reputable journals.Journals carry different weights.A Havard journal, Campridge, London carry heavey weights. In Africa Makerere in Uganda, Wits, UCT, Stellenbosch, Ibadan in Nigeria carry heavy weights. It still needs to be seen how our super intelligent first lady, upon completing her First degree in 2011, then enrolled for a Masters and finished it.Then enrolled for a PHD and presented, published her work.If she was sticctly an academic, she was going to finish PHD BY 2019.
Worse still the Professor who is said to have supervised her, Mararike, did crook the system and called himself Professor early 2000.It was rescinded after he failed to produce valid publications. And no panel had approved his work.o its a shame to call someone Doctor, when she is hardly an honours student.
UZ used to be a place of honour, even the rank marshall at UZ taxi rank used to say ‘ I HAVE A DEGREE OF PUBLIC ORDER. SO MAKE ORDER STUDENTS”

Sad to note things have become this bad. England, Australia, New Zealand did not question Zimbabwean degrees. They would seek competence exams/ programmes for polytechnic deplomas. Now our degrees are subject to re-test and at times only fit for the dump bins like the Chinese and indian degrees.
    This is really sad.
    Leaders think about the future.
amsi Muchena, Dr Chimedza, Dr Rugube Mano, say something to save the once prestigious UZ and at Least Agric Faculty.

All the people behind this scandal must be investigated. This is a clear case of academic fraud. Shame to Nyagura and his crew at UZ. The damage your actions has caused to the reputation of UZ is irreparable.

This is a joke of the year!! What on Earth is actually going in Mugabe’s mind? Is he going mad or what? Surely someone out there must do something especially those in ZANU(PF), that is if they want to be called sensible by the rest of the world. This is insanity and a mockery to our beloved Zimbabwe!!

I agree that it’s been a trend. I remember as far back as 1999, when Chris Mushowe (then a Director in the President’s office, now the de-facto governor of Manicaland province) appealed his failure of a Masters Degree at the UZ by using his connection to the President. He was allowed to pass the degree on appeal, setting a very bad precedent that has culminated in this.
