AT least 50 people, most of them Zanu PF supporters, were arrested at Agriculture deputy minister Paddy Zhanda’s Caledonia Farm just outside Harare yesterday as police moved in to effect an eviction order issued by the High Court a few weeks ago.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba told the State media that the suspects were taken to Mabvuku Police Station.

The suspects’ lawyer, Sylvester Hashiti, said he would file a court application against the police action.

“We are preparing to file a court challenge questioning the constitutionality of the police actions and the order that allowed them to evict people,” he said.

Harare East MP Terence Mukupe (Zanu PF) was said to be on the ground and dealing with the issue, but was not answering calls last night.

Zhanda and his business partner Rina Leonie Du Toit recently obtained an interim eviction order pending finalisation of the land dispute.

The affected residents claimed they had genuine offer letters for the same property.

Animal Farm: this is a real insult and disgrace to the pigs who took over, that human beings could one day over take them in what they did!

It is obvious that grabbing property from owners and allocating it to people was not a wise move. If the affected residents have genuine offer letters for the same property, then they must be reimbursed for developing the offered land by those who offered it in the first place. These are people who were forced out of their homes and rendered homeless and helpless by the government in 2005. Justice must be done for them as well.
