The ongoing Zanu (PF) infighting has nothing to do with protection of people’s interests and is all about personal power.
Welshman Ncube, co-president of the reunited MDC, said in a recent interview that the warring Zanu (PF) factions were tussling for the last meal while the country burned. “This is a clear example of a selfish power struggle as involved factions do everything possible to ensure that they occupy strategic positions at the congress,” he said, adding that people should have been given the opportunity to elect leaders of their choice at the congress.
Simba Makoni, leader of Mavambo/Dawn/ Kusile, concurred with Ncube pointing out that the Zanu (PF) infighting was all about the new comers and the young blood plotting for power by dislodging the old guard. Nine of the 10 veteran Zanu (PF) provincial chairpersons have been dislodged for being aligned to Mujuru.
“There are some in Zanu (PF) who have realised that the sun was setting and that it was time to make hay. They simply want to position themselves whilst they could,” Makoni said.
Many believe Mugabe himself is behind the power struggles and will eventually act to unify the party and consolidate his position.
