Chadzamira poised for Masvingo Zanu PF chairmanship

HARARE – A faction loyal to Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the Zanu PF Masvingo provincial leadership is pushing for provincial secretary for administration Ezra Chadzamira to take over as provincial chairman.

Chadzamira is angling to take over in the wake of the province passing a vote of no confidence on the acting chairman Paradzai Chakona at a provincial executive committee meeting held in October over a raft of scurrilous allegations.

Among the allegations levelled against Chakona are abuse of party resources, imposition of candidates during the district elections and working with ousted former Vice President Joice Mujuru.

The are also mounting fears the push to position Chadzamira could be a precursor to a purge of all officials linked to Zanu PF’s ambitious Young Turks known as the Generation 40 (G40) group — which is locked in a bitter power struggle with Mnangagwa and his supporters, while expediently promoting President Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace.

The provincial leadership is meeting at an inter-district meeting scheduled for today to endorse the plan.

The province, through Masvingo political commissar and MP for Bikita East, Jeby Jaboon, has reportedly also thrown its weight behind Mnangagwa’s bid to take over from Mugabe ahead of the party’s national people’s conference scheduled for December in Victoria Falls.

The province will then table its proposal at the December conference, where they are pushing for Mnangagwa, who has been Mugabe’s official deputy after his installation in December following the sacking of Mujuru, who had held the position for 10 years.

The province also wants Phelekezela Mphoko to be Mugabe’s second deputy, and is staunchly opposed to plans being mooted to have one of the two vice presidential posts reserved for a woman as was the case prior to the December 2014 congress.

The party’s Masvingo province is adamant that Grace must remain the head of the women’s league and retain recognition as the president’s wife.
