Chamisa a brand we can’t lose: Mwonzora

THE MDC-T will not dump Kuwadzana East MP Nelson Chamisa from the party because “he is a brand that we cannot afford to lose”, a senior party official has said.

Chamisa was trounced by Douglas Mwonzora in the battle to land the post of secretary general at the party’s congress last weekend.

Since his defeat, Chamisa has retreated into a shell, leaving observers wondering about his political future.

The 36-year-old lawmaker, who is former party organising secretary, is said to be avoiding the party’s head offices at Harvest House where he was expected to hand over responsibilities to his successor.

Mwonzora told NewZimbabwe.com in an exclusive interview in Harare Friday that Chamisa “is a brand that the party would never want to lose”.

“If the truth is to be told, he is a brand which the MDC could also be identified with. He is a respected politician, mature and an asset to the party,” Mwonzora said.

“He is definitely going to be appointed by the party in the National Executive Council which is the MDC’s highest decision-making organ because of the wisdom he has shown throughout the years.”

The MDC-T’s National Executive Council consists of 54 senior members of the party 36 of whom are appointed by the party president.

It is among the 36 appointees that Chamisa will likely be accommodated.

If it is accurate that 36 of the 54 National Executive Council members are hand picked by Tsvangirai then the whole structure is a charade. Chamisa will not be doing himself any good to accept dependency on patronage. Tsvangirai needs Chamisa more than Chamisa needs Tsvangirai. As for Chamisa, he ought to be careful about the choice he makes. Being appointed is different from being voted for and the difference between both may easily wreck someone’s political career. You are young and able, Chamisa, do not be trapped into the politics of patronage. Serve your party from whatever those election results left you. It’s people who matter and people will take notice of your efforts.

You hypocrite. Why did you contest him after he had been nominated by all but one province if he is a brand you can’t afford to lose. Who are you fooling Douglas? You got no respect for Nelson.

West, east, south whatever direction he takes, Chamisa once told a ‘parable’ of a donkey that Jesus rode into Jerusalem, it might as well apply to him.
