Grovelling saves Sekeramayi, Khaya

BOTH defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi and the new Zanu PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo had to grovel before President Robert Mugabe for them to be spared the axe in the purge of former VP Joice Mujuru’s allies, NewZimbabwe.com has heard.

A close Mujuru ally said the two just survived the purge which saw a number of Zanu PF bigwigs being booted out of the powerful politburo and the influential central committee.

“Sekeremayi and Khaya Moyo met Mugabe and apologised for their support for Mujuru and this did not go down well with other faction leaders,” the source said.

“Sekeramayi was a strong Mujuru ally but let others down by weakening when the struggle called for men and women of stamina.

“Some of us were booted out but we chose to stand for what we believe in.

“Why would one apologise for supporting the VP? What should be known is that people support the office of the VP because it is the second in command and there is no need to apologise for that.”

Khaya Moyo was demoted from being the party’s chairperson and made a spokesperson while Sekeramayi retained his central committee position after a second round of elections and remains the country’s defence minister.

In the run up to the congress a number of party bigwigs were booted out of the structures through controversial votes of no confidence.

At one time Sekeramayi’s wife was booed outside the venue of the congress by rogue youths who wanted to bar her from attending the congress because she is alleged to be a Mujuru sympathiser.

The result was that many immediately thought that her husband was going to be fired but that was not to be.

According to the source, Sekeramayi went through hell to be afforded the opportunity to meet Mugabe at the state house.

“Tensions were high and before Sekeramayi apologised he was not allowed to meet with Mugabe at the state house for official government business.”

Khaya Moyo, on the other hand, endured the pressure and public humiliation as he was made to announce suspensions of people who belonged to his faction, including the expelling of former spokesperson Rugare Gumbo.

“They sold out but the struggle continues. We will see what will happen when power eventually shifts to Mujuru,” said the source.

The news of grovelling brings memories of the 2004 secret meeting of members of the Mnangagwa faction in Tsholotsho.

Press reports then said the then justice minister Patrick Chinamasa literally went down on his knees apologising to Mugabe for having attended the meeting which was allegedly meant to plot Mnangagwa’s rise to the highest post in the country.

In Heidi Holland’s book titled Dinner with Mugabe Moyo said while others had to grovel for their participation in the 2004 meeting he refused to do so hence he was fired.

This time around Chinamasa, currently the minister of finance, was not associated with any faction.
