Gwanda youth urges govt to focus on poverty eradication

Youths in Gwanda have urged the government to continue with its economic empowerment drive to tackle extreme poverty and hunger.

As part of millennium development goals (MDGs) adopted by Zimbabwe and other countries in 2000, eradicating extreme poverty and hunger is one of the priority areas that Zimbabwe chose.

Gwanda youths say they can also play a part in eradicating extreme poverty but this can be achieved if they are empowered.

The youths say supporting artisanal and small scale farmers can help address poverty and hunger.

Though a lot still needs to be done, Zimbabwe has made significant strides in improving basic social services especially in the health sector, the HIV and AIDS prevalence rate in the province has declined from 21 percent to 18,6 percent but remains the highest in the country.

Maternal and child mortality cases are on a downward trend in Matabeleland South province owing to various programmes introduced by the government.

Meanwhile, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly will meet in September this year to review progress made in the attainment of the MDGs.

The problem with our youth is that they think advancement and success are handed on a silver platter. Instead of fighting for a government that will provide an enabling environment they believe empowerment comes in the form of handouts. They should fights against an oppressive system that has stifled their dreams. They should be dreaming of being entrepreneurs and inventors of technology instead of crying for crumbs.
