JOHANNESBURG – The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Tuesday broken its silence about the Zimbabwe rendition investigation to clarify, what it has termed, speculation.

At the weekend, it was reported an initial report implicated senior Hawks officers Anwa Dramat and Shadrack Sibiya in the saga but the final version was allegedly altered by IPID head Robert McBride and cleared them.

Sibiya is still fighting his suspension in the courts, while Dramat is on administrative leave.

The IPID confirmed it had not recommended either of the men be prosecuted.

It said in its statement that only one investigative report relating to the Zimbabwe rendition was ever submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), adding that any other progress report or document compiled prior to that had no legal standing.

The IPID made it clear its final report bared no resemblance, both in content and conclusion, to progress reports.

Eyewitness News has seen one such report, which clearly implicates Dramat and Sibiya in the illegal rendition.

But a source at the directorate says technical evidence relating to cellphone data was used to refute the findings of that document and thus its conclusions were altered.
