Makoni distances self from new coalition

OPPOSITION Mavambo leader, Simba Makoni, has denied that he is part of a grand “coalition of democrats” that is planning to take on Zanu PF in the 2018 elections.

Earlier this month, there were reports that Makoni was among a group of political leaders who were on the verge of sealing a deal that would bring together a “Coalition of Democrats” (CODE) to challenge the ruling party.

Makoni on Tuesday told journalists that he was “not aware of something called CODE”.

He said since 2008 he has advocated the creation of what he said would be a “a grand coalition for change which brings together a cross-section of leaders to solve the problems that the people of Zimbabwe are facing not to gain power”.

“I am not aware of CODE besides having read about it in the press,” said Makoni.

He however said he was in continued consultations with “leaders” from across the country’s spectrum to find solutions to the country’s problems.

“I can confirm that I am in consultations with other leaders in faith, politics, business and across the political divide about what we must do together to solve the problems that are confronting our country,” he said.

“Those consultations have not concretised into any institution or any arrangement that has a document I am aware of,” he said.

Proponents of the grand coalition have however ruled out accommodating MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Sources say the political leaders have not yet signed the agreement as they are still consulting their members.

Among other things, the parties agreed to keep their different identities but use the coalition’s symbol when sponsoring a candidate or when doing activities associated with the coalition.

Media reports said the parties had agreed to “establish a united, democratic, socially just and green Zimbabwe in which all are free, equal, and prosperous and enjoy happy and fulfilling lives”.

“The platform we have created shall be known as the Coalition of Democrats (Code). The Coalition of Democrats shall be a body corporate capable of suing and being sued and acquiring and disposing of property in its own right,” said the draft document.

“For the purposes of participating in elections and sponsoring candidates or doing any other programmes, CODE shall have its own distinct symbols and logos separate from those of the parties or organisations that are its members.

“Membership of CODE shall be open to political parties and organisations which subscribe to the coalition’s practice, values, principles and objectives.”

A united opposition under principled democratic leadership is essential if Zimbabwe is rise phoenix like from the ashes of the ZANU PF inferno of thieving, rights abuses, anti-democratic behaviour and grotesque mismanagement. Simba Makoni needs to throw his hat in the ring and assist those like Tendai Biti who are actually capable of resuscitating the moribund state of Zimbabwe.

Come on Kevin….assist who…a man who could not fight his cause at a congress and dislodge the “incompetent”. Up to now his party is only in words, at least by this time they should have held a rally. Just one maybe, and we could make our own assessment whether they have the support which they claim.

My assessment is the young man lacked patience of vulture and definitely could have easily been the next president of Zimbabwe.

You know I am totally fed up with the opposition movements in Zimbabwe. They are pathetic. All I see is a self obsession with self, with power, with prestige and with title. I am quite frankly disgusted with all of them. How do they think all their itty bitty outfits are going to achieve anything. They have learned NOTHING from the past 15 year. Absolutely nothing! Everyone thinks he or she has the answer. Well none of them do. God does but they can’t look further then their own little feeding troughs. In fact I will go as far as to say that instead of improving our lives these so called opposition parties have made it worse. They cannot organise the proverbial piss up in a brewery. They are no different from the incumbents. They have in fact also become an albatross around Zimbabwe’s necks like the current lot who hang onto power by hook and by crook and have destroyed our nation. The opposition parties spend their days sticking knives in each others backs, spitting at each other, and generally being pathetic and useless. There is absolutely NO leadership that I can see. True leadership does NOT resemble any one person in Zimbabwe at this time. A true leader would resemble the character of the Lord Jesus Christ. He did not bite, and kick, and covet, and spew vitriol, and back stab and slander He was not filled with pride and arrogance and a grandiose sense of self importance. I am one of the most loyal people ever. I have loved Zimbabwe with a passion. I have loved my fellow Zimbabweans with a passion. I have hated to see what politics has done to this nation. Like millions I was impressed by Mugabe’s speech at Independence and like millions it has turned to ashes in our mouths. That speech was not his. It was not from his heart. someone else wrote that speech. And truly when hope came again in the party of the MDC the same thing happened. The people hoped and were loyal and laid down much in hope. It all turned to ashes. I have come to realise that it is futile to put ones hope and trust in any man. Only in God is that hope and trust safe. A costly and very painful lesson. Where is the man who dares to be different? I pray the Lord Himself will raise up a man to lead this nation and do you know what? He won’t look like anyone on the current scene unless someone wakes up and repents in sackcloth and ashes. Truly, I am disappointed and truly disgusted with ZPF, all the MDC’s, MKD, ZAPU and every other small ludicrous little party. You hate each other, you are jealous of each other. There is no brotherhood at all. If I was your CEO I would fire you all. No one excepted. But instead I pray for you. This nation needs repentance like never before. May God have mercy on each one of us and on Zimbabwe. No repentance! no restoration!

Its a living fact that MDC-T is still the biggest opposition so fa in Zimbabwe until proven otherwise. Forming a so-called grand coalition without a party that enjoys a lion’s share in the political arena is nothing but a futile excise. The grounds of excluding MDC-T in the process is based on personal differences between the so called champions of the project {Biti/Mangoma and Ncube} given their history with Tsvangirai. This, therefore defeats the purpose as claimed of Democracy, am sure that is why level headed people in likes of Simba Makoni always said and is still saying leaving MDC-T out will not work to the success of the project. Shutting out Tsvangirai will be excluding +/- a million Zimbabweans behind him which the parties involved might not even reach that figure collectively. if we want to succeed we need to work with facts not illusions. A grand coalition should not be reflected in the number of party leaders who come together but should be determined by how many Zimbabweans are pulling together into the project. ZANU PF only needed Joshua Nkomo with his ZAPU to make things work a unity pact, did not bother about Sithole, Muzorewa etc. Politics is a game of numbers. ZANU PF will not loose a sleep if you don’t include their main rival they know it will remain a pipe dream
