Mugabe deathwishers witches: Mutsvangwa

War Veterans minister Christopher Mutsvangwa has accused those pining for President Robert Mugabe’s death of “witchcraft”, saying people should not be envious of the 91-year-old leader’s long life.

“We all go to church to get a long life and don’t be jealous when someone gets a long life,” Mutsvangwa told journalists at the Quill Club on Monday.

“Wishing someone dead is witchcraft because we all pray for a long life and when someone lives longer, respect him as God has loved him.”

Mutsvangwa said the Zanu PF factional fights, which are taking their toll on the party, were a sign of democracy, but warned any threat to the “nation state will not be tolerated”.

“My understanding is that Zimbabwe goes to polls every now and then and only those that buy the lottery ticket get to win it,” he pontificated.

“If you lose, don’t say the winner should leave because we lost. Some of the people who say Mugabe has overstayed in office don’t even want to take part in elections. Get into the election and if you lose, respect the outcome.

“The question on how governments are changed doesn’t matter. As long as people vote, I’m happy. That this is the democracy we fought for.”

Mutsvangwa said the liberation war was about bringing in political freedom and the factional wars in Zanu PF were a reflection of this.

“They can do it in their madness or in their wisdom,” he said.

“It’s a sign of people who are free, so if they want to do factional politics because they are free, it’s OK. I just love the concept of freedom and the parameters it gives. It’s democracy at work for as long it doesn’t threaten the State. That is where it matters.

“That we can agree, but please, just do not threaten the State that we established. That is playing with fire. We will not tolerate that.”

Zanu PF is embroiled in serious fights with two distinct groups having emerged post-last year’s congress, with one reportedly linked to Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the other one to a clique calling itself Generation 40 (G40) under the leadership of First Lady Grace Mugabe.
