via RadioVop Zimbabwe – ZPP Reports Drop In Human Rights Abuses
The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) says there has been a significant decline in cases of politically-motivated human rights violations across the country with 196 incidents recorded in the month of August, down from 229 reports recorded in July.
In its monthly monitor for August, ZPP noted that despite the decrease in violence, there were several incidents of farm invasions recorded in Mashonaland Central, Matabeleland North and South and violations involving access to food handouts.
“Countrywide there were a few incidents of violations involving accessing food hand-outs. The incidents recorded included being denied access to food because of one’s political affiliation, being ordered to denounce one’s party in order to access food, being ordered to produce a party card before accessing food and being ordered not to wear party regalia at the food distribution point,” reads the report in part.Six such incidents were recorded in Midlands and Mashonaland Central while one was recorded in Masvingo. The report further noted that Chivi, Mwenezi and Chiredzi districts were in critical need of food because most families did not get any meaningful harvests due to erratic rains and poor soils and the high cost of food was beyond the reach of most of the community members.
ZPP was conceived in 2000 by a group of churches and non-governmental organisations with interests in human rights and peace building and has since become a vehicle for civic interventions during political crisis.
