Wedza North poll date set

via Wedza North poll date set | The Herald February 21, 2015

president Mugabe has set May 15 as the date for the Wedza North constituency by-election to replace Cde Simon Kundai Musanhu, who died suddenly last month.

President Mugabe made the proclamation in Statutory Instrument 23 of 2015 published yesterday, ordering the nomination court to sit on March 16 at the Magistrates’ Court, Ruzawi Road, Marondera. Cde Musanhu (47), who was also the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Climate, collapsed and died at his home.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chief elections officer Mr Dominico Chidakuza, in a General Notice in yesterday’s Government Gazette, gave the results of the nomination court which sat for Mt Darwin West and Chirumanzu-Zibagwe constituencies.

Five candidates will battle it out in Chirumanzu-Zibagwe — Cde Auxilia Mnangagwa (Zanu-PF), Ganzamoyo Dewah (Good People’s Movement), Rumbidzai Abigirl Musambasi (Transform Zimbabwe), Munashe Mutodza (National Constitutional Assembly) and Wilbroad Chawaona Kanoti (independent). Mt Darwin West constituency will be contested by Kenard Fungai (Transform Zimbabwe), Reuben Mafigu (National Constitutional Assembly), Cyril Muradzi(Freedom Front) and Bannwell Seremwe (Zanu-PF).

MDC-T, the main opposition party and perennial loser to Zanu-PF, declined to contest the by-elections, citing the need for constitutional alignment of poll regulations as the main cause for concern. Mt Darwin West and Chirumanzu-Zibagwe constituencies fell vacant when embattled former Vice President Joice Mujuru and Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa assumed office as vice presidents.

At law, Vice Presidents are not Members of Parliament, although they can sit there for debate, be leader of the House and conduct business there, but they do not vote.
