ZANU-PF has engaged Parliament to find ways to enable its parliamentarians to buy vehicles they were given by the party for campaigns ahead of the harmonised elections. Parliament has a vehicle loan scheme that sees all legislators getting vehicles under the scheme for them to execute their parliamentary roles. However, the MPs are yet to receive the vehicles from Parliament amid indications that

Treasury has not yet disbursed money for the exercise. Chairman of the Politburo ad hoc committee on the campaign vehicles, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, yesterday said party MPs could keep the vehicles in the mean time.

Other members of the committee are national political commissar Cde Webster Shamu and secretary for transport and social welfare, Cde Nicholas Goche.

“The Politburo’s position on this matter is very clear. Those party candidates who won the election and are now Members of Parliament can keep their cars while payment arrangements are being finalised with Parliament (their employer), said Cde Khaya Moyo in a statement yesterday.

“Those who lost in the election indeed also contributed to the party’s massive win and must produce their payment plans for the said cars to the party’ secretary for transport and social welfare, Cde Nicholas Goche. Those who lost and are without means to pay for the cars must return the same to the provincial headquarters soonest. I hope this statement clarifies the position once and for all.”

A stand-off between the party and its MPs was brewing as secretary for administration, Cde Didymus Mutasa, ordered them to surrender the vehicles for party use ahead of provincial elections. However, the legislators were reluctant arguing that they were yet to receive their cars under the Parliamentary Vehicle Loan Scheme.

Why should any government be financing or giving out cars to any government employee or politician? Either those individuals should be paying for everything out of their own pocket, or if their personal transportation is important to the functioning of government, then government should loan them a car on a daily or weekly basis to meet their needs, as well as others.
