Government has begun sensitisation and consultative workshops on the new Constitution with the distribution of at least 5 000 booklets and abridged versions of the new charter in vernacular in Mashonaland West.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop in Chinhoyi on Monday, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Deputy Minister Fortune Chasi said Government employees should be conversant with provisions of the Constitution as the population has become literate and conscious of their rights.
“It is important that all Government employees be conversant with provisions of the new Constitution because the population will demand certain levels of attention basing on the Constitution,” he said.
“Our people are literate and they will demand certain rights that are provided for in the Constitution and if you are not well-versed you will run into trouble.” At least 16 000 copies of the new Constitution are earmarked for distribution in Mashonaland West with similar figures expected for other provinces.
Government has so far prepared 4 000 copies in braille for the visually-impaired.
Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs secretary Mrs Virginia Mabhiza said the consultations were meant to bring the new Constitution closer to the people.

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND OTHER RESOURCES!
Such hypocrisy! They are not implementing the new constitution and they are giving people booklets to read about it. What about taking steps to make sure that everything in the new constitution is actually implemented and all affected laws are updated.
