A ZANU PF linked group said to be backing Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has lashed out at cabinet ministers and senior government officials for abandoning their posts and tagging along at Grace Mugabe’s countrywide rallies.

The Zimbabwe Youth Action Platform (ZYAP) said ministers known to be part of the Generation 40 (G40) faction were spending productive time criss-crossing the country instead of working on the economy which is on a free fall.

The group singled out local government minister Saviour Kasukuwere and “educated but not learned professors”.

The so-called G40 faction is said to include Professor Jonathan Moyo, Kasukuwere and president Robert Mugabe’s nephew Patrick Zhuwao, who recently called himself a “research-driven economist”.

“Cabinet ministers should attend to their ministerial business at appropriate times. During the week they should be doing their ministerial duties and not be seen elsewhere,” ZYAP said.

Grace, who is also Zanu PF’s secretary for Women Affairs, has resumed her country wide rallies. Routinely seen with her are senior party officials including the two vice presidents Emmerson Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Mphoko.

Another Zanu PF official who has been a constant feature in the meet-the-people rallies is local government minister Kasukuwere, the party’s national commissar.

Kasukuwere is widely thought to be the face of the G40 faction which is said to be opposed to the ascension of Mnangagwa to the presidency after boss Mugabe.

Kasukuwere ‘political thug’

“The party should concentrate on the economy. The leadership is there and we are satisfied. Whoever is not satisfied should move out.

“In fact, we should expel everyone who is too ambitious in Zanu PF because we can’t have a situation where some people are focusing on government work and other are concentrating on individual benefits,” the organisation added.

ZYAP said it was also concerned with the manner in which the party is slowly being diverted into a “shopping mall, where those who are receiving money from regime change agents are going around buying and building power bases upon themselves”.

The group said Kasukuwere was to blame for the chaos characterising the party.

“The face of all this chaos and despondency is none other than the self-proclaimed political thug of our time, Saviour Kasukuwere, who leads a click of political rationality beneficiaries and educated but not learned professors.

“It is this same Kasukuwere who, in 2007 in Beitbridge during a dinner by the 21st February fundraising committee, uttered that the President is now old and should retire.

“It is this same Kasukuwere who abused the youth fund and yet he claims he is not answerable to anyone including the President and Parliament,” ZYAP said in a statement.

ZYAP also rubbished the on-going restructuring process in the ruling party, saying it was being used by certain individuals to elbow out their perceived enemies.

“The whole restructuring process is a sham political strategy to do away with Kasukuwere’s potential threats and those targeted are showered with five year suspensions from the party.

“Saviour Kasukuwere is the complainant, he is the lawyer and he is the jury in these genetically modified cases against his alleged opponents,” ZYAP said.
