THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) yesterday announced plans to sell nearly 50 impounded and unclaimed vehicles including top-of-the range models that have been stuck at its depots for as much as 13 years.

In a latest government gazette, Zimra Commissioner-General Regina Chinamasa said the vehicles would be auctioned  if they remained unclaimed within 30 days.

“Notice is hereby given in terms of section 193(11) of the Customs and Excise Act [Chapter 23:02], that the following goods that are specified in the schedule below have been seized/detained and will be dealt with in terms of section 193(13) of the Customs and Excise Act [Chapter 23:02] if proceedings are not instituted in terms of section 193(12) of the Customs and Excise Act [Chapter 23:02].

“The owners of these goods are unknown and the goods will be sold if not claimed within thirty days of publication of this notice,” Chinamasa said.

According to the list, 37 of the vehicles are at Manica Depot in Beitbridge while 11 are at Harare’s Bak Storage container. In terms of section 193 of the Act, any person from whom the articles have been seized may institute proceedings for the recovery of the property within three months. After the elapse of the three -month grace period, no such proceedings may be instituted.

“If proceedings are not instituted in terms of subsection (12), any articles declared to be forfeited shall without compensation vest in the President and may, by direction of the Commissioner, be sold or destroyed or appropriated to the State,” reads the Act.
