Harare City Council says it is not responsible for the maintenance of faulty fly-overs in the city as they fall under the purview of central government.

Council’s works director Norman Karidza said this in his response to a complaint by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) accusing council of not maintaining the fly-overs, which now pose a huge risk to the motoring public.

The ZLHR had called on council to immediately rehabilitate the fly-overs along Simon Mazorodze Road, Charter Road and Lytton Road.

Simon Mazorodze Road, Charter Road and Lytton Road flyovers, according to a letter to council dated June 21 by lawyer Tinashe Chinopfukutwa, had structural defects that need urgent attention.

“The mentioned fly-overs are under the purview of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development,” Karidza said.

“While I have no detailed information on the work done so far, I understand the ministry recently engaged a consultant to assess the defects and define the remedial works required on the structures.”
