CITIZENS Coalition for Change (CCC) Binga South legislator Fanuel Cumanzala has accused some government officials of allegedly diverting food aid meant to alleviate the impact of the El Nino-induced drought.

Cumanzala told Southern Eye that over 100 people have been denied food aid in his area.

“Binga District food relief efforts are being thwarted by greedy senior Binga Rural District Council and the Binga DDC [District Development Committee] officials who are looting food aid directly from GMB [Grain Marketing Board]  and food distribution points in violation of government policy. The number of people that have been denied aid are more than 100 even though their names were used to request aid and it came. Even the DA [district administrator] is aware of some of the complaints,” he said.

“A woman called Ernesia who is one of the witnesses and also a victim to being scrapped out from benefiting is not taking it easy (sic). The list stretches from Rest, Low Density, Secondary to  Govera. Lots of people, who were deserving recipients, were duped.”

“There is overwhelming evidence that the offices of DDC and Binga RDC looted (in person and through proxies) the wheat which was distributed on  October 20. Most of the wheat was transported to Zambia for resale at the expense of the starving Donga village.”

Contacted for a comment Binga Rural District Council chief executive officer, Joshua Muzamba, said he did not deal with food relief programmes.

“Food relief issues are handled by the DA. So please contact him for the answers you are looking for,” Muzamba said.

Cele Nyathi, an official in the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare ministry Matabeleland North province, said he was not aware of the situation.

“You may send me the questions on my email then i will find out besides the fact am currently in Bulawayo and i have no idea of such happenings,” Nyathi said.
