Govt warns unlicensed liquor dealers Minister Daniel Garwe

Government has issued a strong warning against the rising trend of mobile bottle stores where vendors are selling alcohol directly from car boots.

Addressing journalists at the Ministers-Meet-the Media sessions on Wednesday last week Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe said the selling of unregulated and illicit alcohol ends now.

“People are drinking all over the show — that is now a thing of the past in terms of the mandate that has been given to us,” he said.

“No more mobile bottle stores. Let me repeat, no more mobile bottle stores anymore.

“These people moving with their small cars selling alcohol from boots — no! That must stop.”

The minister said the informal sale of alcohol was illegal and contributed to various issues, including underage drinking, public disorder, and rising crime rates.

Furthermore, he urged law enforcement authorities to take decisive action against those involved in this illicit trade.

“People are drinking all over the shore — that is now a thing of the past in terms of the mandate that has been given to us,” he said.

“No more mobile bottle stores. Let me repeat, no more mobile bottle stores anymore.

“These people moving with their small cars selling alcohol from boots — no! That must stop.”

The Government’s directive comes as part of a broader effort to restore order, ensure public safety, and promote a clean and healthy environment.

Minister also reiterated that the enforcement of these regulations will be strict and unwavering, with support from law enforcement agencies.

“We are committed to fostering a safe, clean, and orderly environment for all citizens. This is not just about enforcing laws; it is about protecting our communities and ensuring a better quality of life for everyone,” he added.

Harare mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume said: “This trend extends to areas surrounding both traditional and mobile bottle stores, contributing to issues related to the sale of illicit substances.”

“The bylaws are explicit, outlining clear penalties for violations, including the confiscation of goods that are being sold illegally.

“To prevent the need for such stringent measures, we urge vendors in the informal sector to comply with these regulations. By adhering to the established bylaws, we can work together to foster a safer and more responsible environment for our communities.”

Authorities have pledged to intensify crackdowns on unlicensed alcohol vendors, warning that those caught engaging in the practice will face hefty fines and possible imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the Government is encouraging responsible drinking and urging communities to report illegal alcohol sales to the police.
