The new addition will be run under the auspices of Hifa’s event management, community projects and audience development arms.

The inaugural edition of the air show will feature local and visiting pilots in a line-up to be unveiled at its official launch in the next few weeks.

Hifa’s associate executive director, Tafadzwa Simba, yesterday confirmed the development.

“This is a project that Hifa has been working on for some time. In 2015 we announced that we will be engaging in several activities aimed at assisting the growth of the arts and culture industry and its audience base. The aim is to do so whilst providing activities that engender and promote collective participation of Zimbabwean citizens in positive and uplifting endeavours,” Simba said.

“This international air show, which is one of the activities that Hifa will run in the summer months after the annual festival, will do exactly that.”

Simba said their plan was to make IHAS the largest aerospace showcase and market in Africa, patterned after the Dubai Air Show and the International Paris Air Show.

“Performing and applied art practitioners will also be there showcasing their skills, thereby exposing their work to new audiences,” Simba added.

He said the build-up to this year’s show will include a “preview”, which will be open exclusively to invited guests who will include school children from disadvantaged backgrounds across the country.

Simba said the show will be a microcosm of the country’s contemporary culture.

Three years ago, Hifa announced a basket of events — Hifa Engage (community projects), Hifa Play (sport), Hifa Amigos (audience development), Hifa Events (conferences and other displays) and Hifa Presents (one-off concerts) — as vehicles to harness the organisation’s skills for industry, community and national development.
