Air Zimbabwe’s acting chief executive officer Innocent Mavhunga has landed on a hard patch after being suspended from employment, Radio VOP can exclusively reveal.

Information stitched together by Radio VOP show that Mavhunga was shown the exit door last Friday by the Ozias Bvute-led Air Zimbabwe Holdings’ board of directors after being fingered in a scam from a report of a forensic audit done on the airline in 2011.

“They (the board) are blaming him on all those things (audit findings). They are saying he was the one in charge when the scam was unearthed,” insiders at Air Zimbabwe told Radio VOP on Monday.

The suspension of Mavhunga comes barely five months after the struggling airline’s board of directors dismissed four senior executives in April in connection with anomalies noted from the forensic audit. The senior executives include Moses Mapanda, the general manager for Air Zimbabwe Passenger, Nicholas Munjere, the general manager for finance, Cephas Tarenyika, the airline’s director for technical operations and Bothwell Gavhumende, the general manager for purchasing and his whole departmental staff.

The sources said the board appointed Edmund Makona, Air Zimbabwe’s head of Corporate Quality, Safety and Security to temporarily fill in Mavhunga’s post.

Air Zimbabwe spokesperson Shingai Taruvinga professed ignorance about the forced departure of Mavhunga when reached for comment by Radio VOP.

“I am not aware of that,” said Taruvinga.

Mavhunga was appointed acting CEO in January 2011 following the resignation of Peter Chikumba.

Under Ozais Bvute the airline is doomed. Sackings are usually done to clear the way for looting!

I regret to say that once Air Zimbabwe was placed in the hands of Non-Professional People, who had no idea whatsoever of running an airline, Air Zimbabwe took a nose dive and was absolutely ruined from Top to Bottom.

The personnel who built Air Zimbabwe when it was proudly named Central African Airways, which I served for some 14+ years, had expertise that was recognized world wide, in particular BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) now known as BA (British Airways), were professional people.

Time and time again we read in the press of the financial mis-appropriation throughout the airline of funds, WHY you might ask, because the people in charge of each and every department, know absolutely nothing about running an airline.

Air Zimbabwe is just but a name now as there is no Air Zimbabwe as such- you have all ruined an airline that took some 50 years to build with a firm foundation, and what remains now, NOTHING.

The Country should be ashamed that it has no proper airline whose routes have now been handed over to the Chinese and others to reap the pickings.

Many of those proud personnel who served that wonderful airline called CAA, whose motto was “We Serve Africa with Wings”, are now unfortunately departed from this world and they would turn in their graves if they only knew what a mess idiots have made of the airline they were proud to have built and served.
