A 37-year-old man was jailed for nine months after being convicted of assaulting a security guard at a private boarding school in the Glen Forest area of Harare.
The incident later sparked a dispute that ended with the learning institution being evicted from its rented premises mid-term.
Fidelis Murefu was initially jailed for 12 months when he appeared before Harare magistrate Rufaro Panavanhu, charged with assault.
The court set aside three months of his jail term on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.
Murefu was convicted of assaulting Leon Musonza, who worked as a security guard at Destiny Achievers Group of Schools, which was renting space at Plot No.12 Glen Forest.
The school had an enrolment of about 350 learners.
The plot belonged to Murefu’s United Kingdom-based parents and he was using part of the yard, while the school rented the other side of the plot.
Circumstances leading to his arrest were that on September 16, 2024, an estate agent visited the plot to carry out some valuations on the instruction of Murefu’s parents, who sought to sell it.
The estate agent viewed the plot on the side occupied by the school before Musonza took them to the other side occupied by Murefu to carry out further valuations.
A foreman, Sani Khumbani, manning the side occupied by Murefu denied the estate agent permission to carry out their evaluation, prompting Musonza to take them back to his workplace.
The court heard that after some hours, Murefu approached Musonza in the guard room and punched him, accusing him of taking thieves to his place of residence.
The school’s vice principal who was only identified as Mr Mudenda later rescued Musonza.
The matter was taken to the police leading to Murefu’s arrest and he was subsequently taken to court where he was convicted after a full trial.
The incident then sparked a dispute that ended up with Murefu’s parents evicting the school.
