HARARE – A man is being sought by police accused of assaulting Tongai Mnangagwa, the deputy tourism minister, during a row over parking.
Antony Mwedziwendira will also been charged with drug possession after police said they found drugs in four vehicles linked to him.
The two men had been attending a birthday party at the corner of 6th and Fife Street in Harare on January 30 and Mnangagwa, who is President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s nephew, was leaving at around 10PM when he was confronted by Mwedziwendira who said the deputy minister’s convoy was blocking his vehicles.
Mwedziwendira “charged towards Mnangagwa and manhandled him and assaulted him with open hands,” a police report of the incident seen by ZimLive said.
“Mnangagwa’s aides intervened and the Mwedziwendira went on to assault one of the aides with open hands once on the face. Upon realising that he was dealing with a deputy minister, accused person fled from the scene,” the report added.
Police were called to the scene and towed away Mwedziwendira’s vehicles – a silver BMW 530I, a red VW Bettel, a blue Mercedes Benz C240 and a silver Mercedes Benz C220.
The vehicles were taken to Milton Park Police Station and drugs detectives were called “after suspicion that the accused person might be dealing drugs,” according to police.
Searches were conducted on the four vehicles and police said they found different drugs including bronclear cough syrup, cannabis and sex enhancers.
Police also recovered two passports in the name of Antony Mwedziwendira and Takudzwa Sachikonye.
COMMENTS
Both the Deputy Minister Mnangagwa and this other guy seem to have been acting like two drunk juvenile delinquents. But Mnangagwa had the advantage of so his called “aides”, which we can call bodyguards, to help him. And there again it might have started as a squabble about the high cost of the goodies that the other guy had for sale in his car. Who ever said our Zimbabwe is boring?
