THE Mbare community has witnessed a transformative shift as local youths enthusiastically embrace a Government-initiated digitalisation programme.

Beneficiaries of the Mbare renewal projects have expressed deep gratitude for the introduction of computers, recognising this initiative as a gateway to participate in the global digital economy and improve their livelihoods.

With the promise of poverty reduction through enhanced digital literacy, the Government is fostering a more skilled and educated citizenry.

Last week marked a significant milestone for the initiative, as locals proudly inaugurated a state-of-the-art computer laboratory designed specifically to empower youths through comprehensive digital training.

This newly established facility offers a range of programmes covering essential computer skills, online safety, and broader digitalisation knowledge.

The initiative aims to create a vibrant digital economy, cultivating a society that is not only aware of technological advancements, but is also equipped to embrace an innovation-driven culture, in alignment with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

The response from youths has been overwhelmingly positive.

Many have welcomed the introduction of computers into their community, emphasising that acquiring digital skills enables them to navigate the evolving job landscape effectively.

During a tour of the Mbare Renewal Project and the deployment of the DigiTruck yesterday, Information Communication Technology , Postal and Courier Services Minister, Tatenda Mavetera, underscored the initiative’s significance in providing a sense of purpose and direction to young people.

“We are here to represent the interests of the youth, and I am pleased with what I see; not one face shows signs of drug abuse. You are taking the lead in revitalising and empowering each other,” she remarked, commending the Mbare community for their dedication and commitment to change.

Minister Mavetera stressed the necessity of embracing technology, reminding the community that the future will increasingly depend on digital tools and platforms.

Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Senator Charles Tawengwa, reaffirmed the importance of the programme following his visit to the Mbare Renewal Project.

“When people think of Mbare, they often perceive it as a backward area, but it is one of the oldest suburbs in Harare. Our goal is to launch initiatives here to empower the community, enabling them to gain skills that will assist their families and foster entrepreneurship.”

Chairperson of the Mbare Renewal Projects Mr Oliver Olembe Vellem, said they were committed to uplifting local livelihoods through digital education.

“We managed to construct a state-of-the-art building which will be used as a computer lab. We have engaged the Minister of ICT, and so far, around 80 youths are currently participating in the programme.

“By equipping them with digital skills, we will ensure that we are never left behind. It’s high time we change Mbare, and we can only do this through digitalisation,” he said.

The impact of the programme is already resonating within the community.

Ms Violet Matsine said: “We are grateful for such an initiative which will positively change our lives. We can now order products online, advertise our services, and even create our CVs.”

This new-found ability to connect with the digital marketplace has instilled a sense of empowerment among the youths, as they explore new avenues for entrepreneurship and professional growth.

Participants like Ms Prisca Gore have discovered that technology enhances communication and efficiency.

“We didn’t know that you could conduct business online. This is critical nowadays because many are digitalising to attract a broader audience,” she remarked, highlighting the significance of adapting to technological trends in today’s economy.

Mr Clever Masope shared a deeper insight, noting the programme’s potential to address social issues within the community.

“This is a vital programme for us as youths. Digitalisation is the way to go. If we stay engaged, then the issue of drugs is likely to diminish,” he explained.

His sentiment reflects the collective hope that increased engagement in productive activities will lead to a decrease in drug abuse among the youth.
