KARIBA mayor George Masendu and two other councillors, including his deputy Farai Magevha, have been recalled from council by the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC Alliance.

Masendu (ward 3), Magevha (ward 3) and Pedzisai Munhuweyi (ward 8) were recalled on Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to town clerk Richard Kamhoti, Local Government minister July Moyo stated that: “In terms of section 278(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as read with section (1)(k), wards 3, 4 and 8 are now vacant.

“In terms of section 121 of the electoral act please proceed to inform the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) of the vacancy.”

Masendu confirmed his recall in a farewell letter to residents.

According to Masendu, they were recalled as punishment for being aligned to the Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change.

“I received a recall letter from Mwonzora, the reason being that I refused to be part of the sinking ship and that I also refused to betray the residents of ward 4 who voted for me into office under the leadership of Chamisa,” he said.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank ward 4 Kariba urban residents for trusting me to be their servant. The journey was not easy, but with my team, we managed to soldier on. I hope and trust the remaining councillors will finish all the outstanding projects.”

Mwonzora also recalled Chitungwiza mayor Lovemore Maiko on Tuesday.

Over 130 legislators and councillors have been recalled from council and Parliament, paving way for by-elections now scheduled for March 26.
