THE 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference on Interfaith Dialogue concluded at the weekend with the unanimous adoption of the landmark “Rome Communiqué,” outlining a seven-point action plan for parliamentarians worldwide to strengthen trust and foster hope through engagement with religion and belief systems.

A central proposal championed by Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, urged leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a transformative tool for bridging faith divides.

Held at Palazzo Montecitorio, Rome, Italy, from June 19-21, the conference focused on the theme “Parliamentarians in Dialogue with Religion and Belief: Strengthening Trust and Embracing Hope for our Common Future.”

In a pivotal address during the General Debate, Adv Mudenda framed dialogue with diverse faiths as a “hallowed responsibility” demanding ethical leadership, empathy, and open-mindedness.

He warned that failure to dynamically engage with the complexities of religious beliefs risks ineffective legislation, weakened oversight, loss of public trust, and the stifling of parliamentarians’ representative role in matters of faith.

Adv Mudenda proposed AI for: translation, personalized religious content, scriptural analysis, and predictive ecosystem modelling. He, however, coupled this with a strong caution: “Parliamentarians and religious leaders must bear a critical responsibility in shaping the ethical governance of AI lest we forget the pivotal anchor of the human factor.”

He further stressed the imperative for parliamentarians to earn public trust, invoking the late Pope Francis’s call to be “Pilgrims of Hope” and tireless peacemakers, quoting: “May diplomacy be tireless in its commitment to seek . . . every opportunity to undertake negotiations aimed at a lasting peace.” Adv Mudenda’s arguments resonated throughout the conference, culminating in the adoption of the Rome Communiqué.
