PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has launched the Presidential Constituency Borehole Scheme in Harare as part of efforts to avert water shortages in the capital.
All 30 constituencies in Harare are set to benefit from the scheme, in line with the Government’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind.
The scheme was launched in Budiriro North Constituency at Tendai Hall yesterday, which falls under CCC National Assembly member Ms Susan Matsunga.
It targets the drilling of 450 boreholes across the city and will also benefit constituencies represented by opposition party members.
Speaking at the launch, Harare Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Charles Tawengwa said the borehole drilling programme is a temporary measure to cushion residents with access to clean water.
Government is working on a permanent solution to water challenges through the construction of Kunzvi Dam in Marondera.
“The Presidential borehole is scheme is an intervention by President Mnangagwa while we are waiting for Kunzvi Dam (under construction) and Muchekeranwa Dam (completed), the boreholes will cover the gap,” he said.
Minister Tawengwa said Kunzvi Dam is expected to be commissioned this year to ease water shortages in Harare.
He also commended residents for their participation in the Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill public hearings and invited the public to attend the 46th Independence celebrations in large numbers.
Zanu PF Central Committee member Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei said there is need to support President Mnangagwa to ensure development continues to flourish through backing Constitutional Amendment No. 3 and realising Vision 2030.
President Mnangagwa will drill 480 boreholes in Harare, with each constituency expected to receive 15.
“The move is to ensure residents will access to ensure residents have access to clean water. This is a temporary measure. The Government is currently constructing Kunzvi Dam which is nearing completion. The commissioning of the dam is expected this year,” said Dr Tagwirei.
He called for unity of purpose among Zimbabweans regardless of political affiliation.
“President Mnangagwa is a unifier, he wants people to be united despite our political differences. Unity is a key component for any meaningful development in the country.
“We need to move in one direction as Zimbabweans” said Dr Tagwirei.
Presidential adviser and Central Committee member Dr Paul Tungwarara said he will support efforts to ensure adequate boreholes are drilled across Harare to improve water access.
He urged residents to support President Mnangagwa’s vision, regardless of political affiliation.
“Let us come together to advance the shared goal of development,” he said.
He also pledged to roll out more empowerment programmes across constituencies to ensure no one is left behind.
The meeting was attended by Zanu PF deputy Secretary for Security Cde Tendai Chirau, Council of Elders member Cde Idah Mashonganyika, political commissar Cde Voyage Dambuza and CCC parliamentarians.
