The public arrested Daniel Munyanyi (50), the man suspected of shooting and killing two detectives on Sunday morning during a gunfight in Ndemu Village, Ndanga, Zaka.
One detective died on the spot, while the second succumbed to his injuries on the way to Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
Immediately after allegedly killing the two detectives, Munyanyi fled the scene and had been on the run until his arrest in Bikita yesterday afternoon.
In a statement last night, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of the 50-year-old suspect in Nyika, Bikita.
“The arrest was effected by members of the public. The firearm used in the commission of murder cases has also been recovered,” said Comm Nyathi.
He commended the people of Nyika “for working together with the police to effect the arrest.”
Authorities plan to release more details soon. Munyanyi was part of a gang of five armed robbers being hunted by the police.
A team of CID Homicide detectives from Harare that was tracking the gang, arrested four other suspected robbers.
Police had to beef up their team searching for Munyanyi since his escape after the shootings, with his gun, put lives of people at risk.
In an earlier statement, Comm Nyathi said: “The two detectives were part of a team tracking the suspect for armed robbery cases which occurred in Harare and surrounding areas.
“More details on the murder of Detective Constables Bernard Chimbeke (37) and McKenzie Chitsowe (43) will be released in due course.”
Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba expressed his condolences to the Chimbeke and Chitsowe families over the incident and tragic loss.
In March last year, two suspects were shot dead while three others were arrested on allegations of fatally shooting a Bulawayo police officer as he attended to a crime scene in Tshabalala suburb.
Sipho Ncube (24) and Dumisani Ndlovu (32) tried to evade arrest, resulting in a shoot-out with police detectives along Harrow Street, Sauerstown in Bulawayo.
The pair died on admission to United Bulawayo Hospitals from gunshot wounds sustained in the shoot-out.
