Government has allocated 10 more buses to the Public Service Commission (PSC) to facilitate the movement of civil servants to and from work.This brings the number of buses allocated to the PSC in Harare to 28.
Public Service Commission Secretary Ambassador Jonathan Wutawunashe said the move was aimed at alleviating the transport problems faced by civil servants.
“Government has made a decision to address the transport difficulties that were being faced by public servants,” he said.
“We realised that it is important to augment the fleet of buses that we have so that we have adequate coverage of the various destinations to which our public sector workers go.”
Ambassador Wutawunashe said the public workers responded positively and embraced the intervention.
“The service is getting very popular and is well subscribed because it is addressing a felt need of public servants,” he said.
“It has enabled them to come to work, which has been difficult to do in recent days with many of them failing to access affordable transport to get to their work stations.
“We are celebrating the partnership we have forged with various players, particularly the private sector in our bid to augment our fleet that facilitate civil servants, public servants in general to come to work.”
Civil servants pay $0,50 for short distances and $0,70 for long distances.
The latest intervention comes shortly after President Mnangagwa last week directed Treasury to pay civil servants a cushioning allowance of between 22,7 percent for the lowest paid worker and 5 percent for the highest paid employee in January, February and March.
