Special Committee to sack Mugabe, Grace

HARARE – Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party will hold a special central committee meeting on Sunday morning to dismiss 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe as its leader, two party sources told Reuters on Saturday.

The meeting, which is scheduled to start at 1030 am, will also reinstate ousted vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa and remove Mugabe’s wife, Grace, from the leadership of the Zanu-PF Women’s League.

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Zimbabwe and globally to call for Mugabe’s sacking.

The move comes after the military took control of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation and placed Mugabe under house arrest on Tuesday in response to the sacking of the deputy president.

The central committee will on the recommendations of the party’s 10 provinces who have unanimously said Mugabe and Grace must be expelled from the party.
