THOUSANDS of people gathered at Nyakuchena Primary School in Makaha, Mudzi District, on Wednesday for the installation of substantive Chief Nyakuchena.
Born Keith Karinda Chimbangu (41), the substantive Chief Nyakuchena was installed after his appointment by President Mnangagwa in December last year.
He takes over from Pera Bvunzawabaya, who died in 2020. Mr Kizito, the son of the late Mr Bvunzawabaya, then took over in an acting chief capacity.
In his remarks during the installation ceremony, the Local Government and Public Works Minister, Daniel Garwe, applauded the critical role being played by chiefs in the development of communities.
“Let me take this opportunity to thank all chiefs for your commendable support in ensuring food security in all your communities, notwithstanding the vagaries of a changing climatic environment,” he said.
“The Zunde raMambo scheme, as a tried and tested social safety net, helps disadvantaged social groups to get adequate food from their traditional leaders, especially in seasons of drought and dry spells.
“As the Government, we encourage other stakeholders such as NGOs to give support for the sustainability of the Zunde raMambo.”
He urged Chief Nyakuchena to remember to discharge his duties in terms of the Constitution and the Traditional Leaders Act.
Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Advocate Itayi Ndudzo and the National Council of Chiefs President Senator Mtshane Khumalo were among the people who witnessed the installation.
