The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has warned the public to exercise extreme caution following warnings of heavy rain and strong winds effective from Tuesday, January 20, 2026, that was issued by the Meteorological Services Department (MSD).

In a statement, ZETDC said severe weather conditions often damage electricity infrastructure, posing serious risks to life and property if safety precautions are ignored.

“Heavy rains and strong winds often cause damage to electrical infrastructure,” read the statement.

The power utility company urged members of the public to treat all fallen or low-hanging power lines as live.

ZETDC also said approaching downed lines, particularly in wet conditions, can be fatal as water conducts electricity.

The utility appealed to customers to immediately report any electrical faults, including fallen poles, sparking wires or flooded substations, through its 24-hour contact centre on 704 or at the nearest Customer Service Centre.

ZETDC also warned against handling electrical appliances during storms, advising the public not to touch switches, sockets or appliances with wet hands or while standing on wet surfaces.

In cases where homes begin to flood, customers were urged to switch off electricity at the main switch, provided it is safe to reach.

To minimise damage from lightning-induced power surges, the company advised customers to unplug non-essential electronic gadgets during storms.

Meanwhile, ZETDC said power restoration efforts may take longer during periods of heavy rainfall.

“During heavy rains, restoration of faults may take longer than usual as our technical teams must follow safety protocols, which include suspending work on overhead lines during active storms,” reads the statement.

The power utility reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives while maintaining electricity supply and urged the public to prioritise safety as the country experiences intensified rainfall activity.
