Congress signals death of democracy

The Zanu (PF) congress – a meaningless event which seemingly takes priority over life itself – is finally underway. On the collective whim of Zanu (PF), the school calendar was, without notice, hurriedly changed, as the line between party affairs and national issues remains blurred. Even the news readers on ZTV were pressed, like children scrubbed and dressed for church, into wearing Mugabe’s mug shot on specially printed T-shirts.

It is a bad time to be a cow right now, as it is a week when, as always, several head of cattle will be slaughtered. With each of the 10 provinces having been given a target of raising $150,000, add to that several donations of livestock, plus the $1 million raised at the dinner hosted by Vice President Joice Mujuru, this year’s event is set to cost millions of dollars.

While the end of the congress, for ordinary citizens, means a return to the long-postponed bread and butter issues, for some party bigwigs, this will be a time of great anxiety.

“Congress signals death of democracy” did it ever exist?
