Mwonzora: Biti paying for arrogance

via Mwonzora: Biti paying for arrogance – NewZimbabwe 18 March 2015

MDC-T secretary general Douglas Mwonzora says Tendai Biti was paying for “arrogance” after the mastermind of last year’s split by the main opposition and his 20 associated MPs were Tuesday expelled from parliament for ditching the party.

Mwonzora was speaking to Newzimbabwe.com Wednesday, a day after Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda granted the MDC-T’s request to recall legislators who had renounced their membership of the party.

“We gave them from June last year to August; the President (Tsvangirai) announced an amnesty, they failed to take heed,” Mwonzora said, “After congress we gave them almost six months to come back to the party, they refused.

“We sent Senator (Morgan) Komichi to discuss with them before we recalled them, they were just arrogant. That is when Mr Biti said if anybody is recalled, he will change his name to Morgan Mugabe.”

The former Nyanga North legislator went on to extend an olive branch to the embattled group, saying they were still free to retrace their steps back to his party.

“The door is still very open to come back to the party; the door isn’t open for them to go back to Parliament. We have always accepted our prodigal sons and daughters,” Mwonzora said.

He also said his party had no immediate intentions of going on a witch hunt for mayors and councillors who have openly sided with Biti’s disastrous renewal project.

Mwonzora was quick to warn the axe would fall hard on party rebels who do not, in the meanwhile, renounce their membership to the rival group.

“We have never had an aim to witch hunt anyone. Our aim has always been to follow the law and to preserve the integrity of the party,” Mwonzora said.

“We first offer people a chance to come back to the party to renounce whatever they would have done. That process would have to be followed.

“Our aim is not to witch hunt and prejudice the people; we do that as a last resort.”

The rival Renewal Team camp has since transformed into being the United Movement for Democratic Change (UMDC) after a merger with another party splinter group led by Welsh Ncube.
