via New Attorney General appointed – ZBC 19 February 2015

President Robert Mugabe has appointed Mr Prince Machaya to the post of Attorney General of Zimbabwe.

The appointment is in terms of section 114 (1) of the constitution of Zimbabwe.

Mr Machaya has been Deputy Attorney General since December 2007 and his new appointment will see the expeditious alignment of legislation to the constitution since this is one of his core functions as Attorney-General.

Mr Machaya, who replaces Mr Johannes Tomana who was promoted to be the Prosecutor General, is expected to take the oath of office soon.

Actually, Tomoma got a demotion, since his new job is merely to enforce the laws of the land. The Attorney General is supposed to provide legal advice in formulating and interpreting tha actual laws, so his job is superior. However, it’s not surprising that ZBC, and indeed Mugabe as well, would perceive Tomoma to be superior, since prosecuting people for violating silly laws is one of the ways that ZANU-PF retains their stranglehold over the majority of Zimbabwe’s citizens.
