THE Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has installed over 31 000 prepaid water meters for domestic and commercial clients since the roll-out of the programme in 2021.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail, the authority’s corporate communications and marketing manager, Mrs Marjorie Munyonga, said: “The roll-out of prepaid water meters in small towns, growth points and rural service centres where Zinwa provides service has progressed quite well, with the target of rolling out 35 000 meters remaining within reach.

“To date, a total of 31 026 prepaid water meters have been installed since commencement of the roll-out in 2021.”

She added: “Places that have benefitted from the roll-out include Karoi, Mvurwi, Nyanga, Murewa, Chivhu, Mutoko, Hwange and Glendale.

“The installed meters are functional.

“In 2024, meters were installed in Guruve and Murambinda.”

Prepaid water meters ensure that the user pays for a specific amount of water upfront.

The meter tracks water consumption and debits the amount used from the balance.

Once the credit is depleted, supplies are discontinued.

Added Mrs Munyonga: “Prepaid water meters have brought convenience to clients, who now have enhanced control over
their water consumption patterns and budgets.

“The meters have also removed the debt burden on clients, which was a key feature with the post-paid meters’ system since clients now pay for water before consumption.”
