HARARE – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s fate is being decided at a special Zanu-PF meeting in Harare on Sunday.

The influential youth league of Zimbabwe’s ruling party called Sunday for President Robert Mugabe to leave office and his wife Grace to be thrown out of the party, piling further pressure on the veteran leader.

The Zanu-PF Youth League has been fiercely loyal to Mugabe, 93, but following the military takeover last week, it said he should step down “so that he can rest as the elderly statesman he is.”

According to the head of the Zimbabwean liberation war veterans, the ruling party will remove Mugabe from power on Sunday.

Chris Mutsvangwa, who has led the campaign to oust Zimbabwe’s ruler of the last 37 years, said a special meeting of the Zanu-PF central committee would also reinstate ousted vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa and remove Mugabe’s wife, Grace, as head of the ZANU-PF Women’s League.

“We are going all the way,” Mutsvangwa told Reuters as he headed into the meeting, adding that Mugabe should just resign and leave the country. “He’s trying to bargain for a dignified exit but he should just smell the coffee and gap it.”
