HARARE – Zimbabwean president-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa says he has ordered the release of MDC’s Tendai Biti.
Mnangagwa said on social media that he intervened to ensure peace and adherence to the law.
Biti, a leading MDC-Alliance politician, was released on bail on Thursday evening.
He was arrested on Wednesday when he tried to flee to neighbouring Zambia and was later denied political asylum and deported back to Zimbabwe, where he was detained again.
Zimbabwean police accuse Biti of inciting political violence.
Equally important, however, is an adherence to the rule of law. I repeat – no one is above the law. Thus due to the serious nature of the allegations of incitement, due process will continue. (2/3)
