A thief who attempted to steal a Zesa transformer in Domboshava was electrocuted and his body burnt beyond recognition with his remains found on Friday.

Police are now appealing to the public who might have a relative missing to contact ZRP Chinamhora for assistance.

Mashonaland East Province police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi said the thief wanted to steal oil and copper wire when he met his death at the transformer in Chiroodza Village under Chief Chinamhora in Domboshava.

The police list the dead thief as 1,7m tall, with short hair, wearing brown trousers, blue and red adidas shoes, blue bomber jacket and carrying a khaki ray bag with tools of trade which include pliers, copper wires and screw drivers.

“The body was found by a villager who had gone to check his crops. The body is currently at Makumbe Hospital mortuary”, said Inspector Chazovachiyi.

“We are appealing to members of the public not to steal or vandalise ZESA equipment as they risk being arrested and also electrocuted.

“We are also appealing to anyone who might be missing their relative to contact ZRP Chinamhora for assistance or contact Sergeant Gwati on 0773 084 438.”

In another case of theft, police in Mashonaland East have launched a manhunt for eight thieves who pounced on a security guard who was guarding ZINWA water pump and ZESA transformer in Macheke and stole oil and wire from the transformer before fleeing.

The suspects tied security guard Justice Dzingo with a wire, proceeded to cut two poles which were holding the transformer and then cut open the transformer and stole copper wire and oil, before also cutting loose and stealing a 20m armoured cable.

Insp Chazovachiyi said investigations are in progress.
