Avaaz petition to protest 2013 Zimbabwe Elections

by email
A Zimbabwean support group has set up a worldwide online petition on Avaaz.org, a global campaign network site, to protest against the rigged 2013 Zimbabwe Elections and their premature endorsement by Zimbabwe’s regional neighbours. The petition will be delivered to Southern African Development Community (SADC) and South African President Jacob Zuma. The group is hoping that as many people as possible from around the world (including Zimbabweans) will join them and sign the petition to pressure SADC and president Zuma to reject this sham election and respect the long history that this region shares in its fight for Democracy, Justice and Freedom. Sign now to voice your protest in support of democracy in Zimbabwe (your email address will not be published):

If we reach very high numbers of signatures, it will definitely add to the public pressure and surely there will be another delivery to the respondents of the petition, with respective coverage in the media.

This is great. Well done to everyone coordinating this, including ‘Joe’ and the Zimbabwean support group. I signed quite early and have passed it on to others. I noticed that the signatures have reached 1,752.

This is is encouraging, but still quite a small number, relative to the exceptionally challenging problem we have in creating enough people power to overcome the extremely stubborn and resistant forces who will attempt to dismiss this.

In view of this, can I suggest that the survey is kept open for quite a lot longer? I’ve noticed the signatures are growing steadily but getting the word out does take time, particularly given different time zones around the world, and also variable capabilities as regards access to computers, internet, reading issues, language issues, etc.

Given the number of Zimbabweans not only in the country but in the diaspora who may wish to sign this, I think it would be very helpful if we could consider a target of several millions, and allow time for the message to spread far and wide.

I know that the initial petition may have already been submitted but a much larger one could now be gathered together and sent again to SADC, Zuma, the UN, the AU, and numerous other appropriate bodies.

Best of luck to you all in our hopes to restore Zimbabwe to democracy, peace, happiness and prosperity once this nightmare is over.

I honestly think tha SADC will prefer war within the region not peaceful transfer of power.
