Cholera confirmed in Chiredzi

Cholera has been confirmed this week at Chizvirizvi rural health centre in Chiredzi district under Masvingo province, The Zimbabwean can exclusively reveal.

This is the cholera case to be confirmed since 2013.

A health official in Chiredzi told The Zimbabwean that more cases could be reported among members of the family of the infected person and the community at large.

“We recorded a single cholera case this week and more could be reported in the community due to poor water and sanitation facilities in the area,” said the source.

Further investigations by this reporter confirm the development.

The current health ministry’s weekly disease surveillance report confirms the case.

However, typhoid outbreaks have also been reported across the country with 204 confirmed cases having been reported since January 2015.

“Thirty-six new suspected cases and 22 confirmed cases were reported this week.

The cases were reported in Harare, Bulawayo, Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Central provinces,” reveal the report.

A serious outbreak of cholera has been reported in neighbouring country- Mozambique in Tete province where thousands of cases and hundreds of deaths have been reported.
