via Mujuru facing Zanu PF expulsion 6 December 2014
VICE President Joice Mujuru and her co-accused are possibly out of Zanu PF after Congress approved constitutional amendments demanding the expulsion of any member who is either disloyal or treacherous to the leadership.
The congress also gave Mugabe sweeping powers which will see him abitrarily choosing his lieutanants and other key office bearers.
Secretary for Legal Affairs, Emmerson Mnangagwa read the proposed constitutional amendments, dropping the bombshell on the embattled Mujuru and her faction that stands accused of plotting to unseat President Robert Mugabe.
If Mujuru and other alleged coup plotters; Didymus Mutasa, Nicholas Goche and Ray Kaukonde, among others, are indeed expelled, they will follow Rugare Gumbo and former war veterans’ leader, Jabulani Sibanda who were recently expelled from the party.
“A member or office bearer on whom a vote of no confidence has been passed by an appropriate organ shall be expelled from the party from the date on which the vote of no confidence was passed, if the vote is on the grounds of disloyalty or treachery,” said Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa added that any member on whom a vote of no confidence is passed on grounds of incompetence and negligence of duty will be suspended from the party for five years.
The constitutional amendments spell doom on the ousted party members, among them provincial chairpersons. They include Jason Machaya (Midlands), Ray Kaukonde (Mashonaland East), Andrew Langa (Mat South), Themba Mliswa (Mash West), Ambassador John Shumba Mvundura (Manicaland), Callisto Gwanesta (Masvingo), Miriam Chikukwa (Harare) and Luke Mushore (Mash Central), who all received votes of no confidence.
Those found guilty of corruption and criminal misconduct or jailed for at least six months will be disciplined by the party, another predicament likely to befall Mujuru if corruption allegations against her are to be proved. She is accused of extortion, where she would allegedly demand 10 percent in most companies as protection fund.
The Zanu PF congress also approved a constitutional amendment, empowering Mugabe to appoint his deputies in accordance with the 1987 Unity Accord signed between Zanu PF and PF ZAPU.
Mugabe – 90, who was endorsed to lead the party at the congress, will also be empowered to appoint the party’s National Chairperson. He is expected to exercise his powers soon.
The congress also resolved to appoint a Zanu PF elections commission which shall be responsible for conducting the party’s internal polls which shall be composed of nine commissioners appointed by the president.
“Elections to any and all party organs shall be by secret ballot conducted by the Zanu PF election commissions,” read the new constitutional provisions.
