Mashonaland West provincial medical director, Wensilus Nyamayaro, confirmed that two people from Manyembere village tested positive to typhoid, saying preliminary investigations indicated that people from the affected six villages drew drinking water from the nearby river.

“Yes, two people have tested positive to typhoid, while the ministry is testing and monitoring more than a hundred suspected cases. We have since dispatched our district and provincial teams to monitor the situation on the ground,” he said.

Some of the affected villages include Chidamoyo, Svenhiwa, Kaonza, Chatyavazungu and Teesza. Typhoid has claimed two lives in Harare and left dozens others hospitalised since the beginning of this year, with health experts fearing a major outbreak due to the incessant rains received in most parts of the country.

Last year, the disease accounted for nine deaths countrywide.
